It was November 1991, I landed by Fokker flight, at Chitral Airport. I had already studied Gazetteer of Chitral by the British government of India. As a student of Anthropology, Chitral posting remains a fond memory. The officers of Chitral Police received us.

    .

The town and the area was glistening with the autumn colours, quite fascinating. The mighty Trichmir was shining, as a sign of welcome. Chitral bazars was not so busy due to the ending summer season, but a peaceful environment had attracted foreigners ,some in the local dresses.

    .

Sayurj Public School, was housed in building near DC house, it had lady teachers from England, my daughter Zainab got admitted in School. Major Langland, although in his seventies was fit .

    .

My passion with horses ,and riding was revived ,thanks to Col Mukhtar Shah and other Officers of Chitral Scouts. Polo ground, Junali ,was our meeting place. The other venue was only Squash court, near Mehtars Fort, where some us would play, along with the few foreigners.

    .

As the winters approached, the town started becoming more and more silent, and sublime as I liked snow and cozy winters, being a dweller of Abbottabad, was akin to such environments.

    .

Major Langley told me, that when the Fokker starts entering Chital valley, he would come out of his room, till it descending to the difficult Airport.

Life in town was linked with the uncertain flights.

    .

During those times Kunar province of Afghanistan was administered by different tribal groups, the road from Arandu to the Bajawar Agency was open.

    .

We had fresh supplies of vegetables and many items, particularly the LPG, which was named by our devout and master cook ,Wazir as SUI GAS. (to be continued).
