CHITRAL: Shandur Festival started here on Sunday in Shandur with a breathtaking polo match between the teams of Lasupr (Chitral) and Ghizar (Gilgit-Baltistan) followed by paragliding, mountain race and a flurry of other lively activities including cultural show.
Inspector general of Frontier Corps Nasim Ahmed Khan formally inaugurated the festival by hurling the ball into the ground between the Laspur team of Chitral and Ghizar team of Gilgit-Baltistan arrayed on opposite sides of the centre line of the ground.
In the first match, the Ghizer team beat the Laspur by one goal after a hectic efforts which scored 8 goals against the 7 goals of the opponent while in the second match Mastuj (Chitral) team thrashed the Yasin (Gilgit-Baltistan) by 7 to zero goals.
Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mahmood Khan gave away shields and prizes to the winning teams and players as chief guest of the occasion while senior minister of tourism Atif Khan and information minister Shaukat Yousufzai were also in attendance.
The festival will conclude on Tuesday with a fantastic and a breathtaking polo final match between the A teams of Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan where Prime Minister Imran Khan is expected to arrive as chief guest.
The festival is held every year since 1982 as calendar event (from July 7 through 9) by the tourism department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and managed by the district administration of Chitral.
In the second match of Shandur Festival Sub Division Mastuj of Chitral beat Yaseen by 7-0 goals, similarly Gilgit D won the third match by 5-2 goals beating Chitral D. On the second day of Festival Chital B and C will play a free style polo match with Gilgit B and C.
