CHITRAL: The district polo association has warned the government of boycotting the upcoming district cup polo tournament commencing from 12th June and the Shandur Polo tournament in July if the allowances and compensations to the players were not paid which were being delayed by the government.
In a meeting of the polo players held here on Monday chaired by president of the association, Shahzada Sikandarul Mulk, it was regretted that the government did not release the funds for the polo players as allowances for participating in the two events last year.
The players said that against the huge expenses for upkeeping of horse for polo, the government had fixed a meager amount of only Rs. 8000 per annum whose payment they were waiting for the last one year.
They said that extra allowance for the players playing in Shandur and the compensation for the players losing their horse in the highest polo ground (Shandur) was not paid to them despite repeated reminders and demands.
They regretted that the government was not paying due attention towards the promotion of polo which had its importance for the promotion of tourism in the area as the tourism and polo were closely related with each other.
Meanwhile, as many as 79 teams from across the district will participate in the district cup polo tournament which will commence from 12th June in the city polo ground.
The draw for fixing the schedule of matches of the tournament was held here on Monday supervised by district officer (finance) Hayat Shah and president of district polo association Shahzada Sikandarul Mulk while captains of the participating teams were also present.
