Plantation campaign kicked off in Chital town

By Zahiruddin

CHITRAL: The forest department will provide 0.587 million saplings for the current plantation campaign in Chitral district while special initiatives have also been taken to enlist the support of the people to make it a success. Divisional forest officer Gulzarur Rahman while briefing a gathering on the occasion of inauguration of plantation campaign for the year here on Wednesday, said that to achieve the target of ‘Green Chitral’, the department has planned to ensure plantation in every nook and corner of the district. He said that for this purpose, Booni (upper Chitral), Chitral central, Drosh and Arandu sub-divisions of forest department have raised their nurseries. He said that local support organizations in each union council level have been included in the campaign for the first time. Member National Assembly from Chitral Shahzada Mohyuddin kicked off the campaign by planting deodar sapling in front of Police Rest House Balach. Speaking on the occasion, he asked the forest department to concentrate on afforestation in upper part of the district which is totally devoid of forests. He said that the ever-increasing population of Chitral is exerting tremendous pressure on the forest resources and it is feared that the forest will face depletion within a decade. Mr. Mohyuddin was of the view that the forests of Chitral in its southern part are deforested by the people of other parts of the district to get wood for fuel purpose. He proposed that to meet the growing demand of fuel wood, the vast tract of Kagh Lusht in upper Chitral must be afforested by such species of plants which are known for fast growth. Addressing on the occasion, the Chitral DCO Rahmatullah Wazir enumerated the efforts of the district administration for plantation in unprecedented scale. He said that the administration is extending fully support to the forest department for its success. The range officers of the department Syed Muzafar Jan, Fazil Khaliq, Muhammad Sarwar and Ijaz Ahmed were also present on the occasion.
