DNN Demands to write-off microfinance Banks loans
By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: District Naib Nazim (DNN) Sultan Shah has demanded
of prime minister Gilani to write off the loans of microfinance
banks to provide relief to hundreds of those poor people who had
initiated small business for self employment. Addressing a press
conference here on Friday, he said that a large number of people
especially youth folk had started business by getting loans from
the micro-finance banks but due to the turmoil in Malakand
Division, they suffered irreparable losses. He said that
Chitral-Peshawar road remained closed for eight months continuously
and all the tourism activities stopped inflicting loss on them.
Flanked by social workers Karim Shah, Mohmmad Khan of Karimabad
valley, Mr. Shah said that the prime minister announced to waive
off the agricultural loans of the farmers in the district but that
of microfinance were ignored. He warned that if the affected
persons of small business are not given similar treatment of
farmers, then hundreds of families will face starvation and famine
as they are not left with a single penny to return the loans to the
banks. Mr. Shah said that Chitral is equally affected of the war on
terror due to the blockade of road where business activities
plunged to lowest ebb for a period of more than one year. He said
that the people associated with small business were the sole
bread-earners of their respective families and had started the
humble business by the loans from the banks ranging from 25 to 60
thousands rupees. He regretted that such pitiable people were
ignored by the government while formulating the Malakand package
while the affected people had no piece of land for farming.
