Chitral Cultural Delegation returns from
Tajikistan
By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: The members of the cultural party arrived back here
on Monday after participation in ‘The Roof of the World Festival’
held in Khorog city of the central Asian country Tajikistan. The
artists of Chitral had been invited for the first time in the
three-day annual festival where artists of more than twenty five
countries participate. The Chitral team consisted of Taleem Khan (
flute), Muhammad Wali (drum), Mansoor Shabab (singer) and Shaukat
Ali (poet). Talking to this correspondent here on Monday, Mr.
Shaukat Ali (head of the party) said that the due to the proximity
of chitral with Tajikistan, many similarities can be drawn between
different cultural aspects of Chitral and Tajikistan. He said that
the performance of his party highly extolled by every one in the
festival and it was due to this reason that they were given extra
time for performance. He observed that the musical instruments
being used in Tajikistan are basically the same as in Chitral but
with slight modification for its upgradation. He mentioned flute
and sitar which were commonly used in the Central Asian republics
while in Chitral these form the main components of musical
instruments. Mr. Ali said that in Chitral, no earnest effort has
ever been made to rejuvenate the folk music as a result of which it
is dying out. He expressed the need of the exchange of cultural
parties between Chitral and Tajikistan which will further promote
tourism in the region. He said that Tajikistan is equally
accessible by land route as the two regions are separated by a
small band of Badakhshan Afghanistan.
