4500 MW electricity potential available in Chitral.......Engr
Fazle Rabi
By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: An electrical engineer from Chitral Fazle Rabbi has
warned the government that the gap between supply and demand of
electricity in Chitral will turn a horrendous shape if the galore
of hydro-power potentials are not exploited on emergency basis.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday flanked by engineer
Sardar Azam, he said that general capacity of the local small hydro
power station of WAPDA is nearly one mega watt while the demand of
the city exceeds 4 MW as a result of which load shedding of 20
hours has become the order of the day. He regretted the business
activities has plunged to lowest ebb for want of power supply. He
said that there are a large number of sites where small hydro-power
stations can be built within a few months. He said that the work on
the 106 mega watt Golen Gol Hydro project is going on with slow
speed and may take more than decade for being commissioned to work.
Mr. Rabbi said that according to the technical report of a German
organization (GTZ), there is a potential of 4500 MW of electricity
in the district but no solid strategy is in sight for their
exploitation. He asked both the federal and provincial governments
to launch a crash programme to overcome the shortage of power in
the city which has put the whole population at tremendous trouble.
He also proposed to run the diesel power generators of WAPDA in
Chitral to lessen the duration of load shedding and mitigate their
miseries.
