Increasing symptoms of depression in Chitral

We see a paradigm shift in political, economic, social and cultural order of the world. Many problems and diseases occur particularly in developing world due to lack of resources to counter them and developed world in general.
Media plays an important role in dealing with many problems and diseases with the help of health department of the country.

Indian print and electronic media is more active by engaging different experts in different TV and other programs to deal with the problems of pubic concern. Indian film industry is more active for healing of such kinds of victims as well. Few examples of Bollywood here I would rather to mention. TV legend Amitabh Bachchan in the movie “Paa” is really playing a commendable role to deal with new phenomenon of Progeria. This film has been picturized on twelve years baby of the suffering of Progeria, a rare diseases that causing aging.

Another Indian Film ,”My name is Khan” wherein the role of actor Shah Rukh Khan being autistic is mesmerizing and interesting to build the image of Islam by a positive answer to a mullah , supporting people at the time of extreme need and meeting with the president of American only to endorse “My name is Khan. I am not terrorist”. In this film the mother’s look after and nourishment of an autistic child is an inspiration for the parents of such special children. There hidden lesson is that when the autistic children’ are nourished and groomed with care they can etch in stone. A Drama “App Ki Antra” depicts also an autistic children’ are being treated in a centre under the aegis of high caliber of experts and doctors who are treating them psychologically, mentally and physically in a systematic way and in this Drama the role of parents glaring reflects as well. Autism and Progeria both are new diseases which film industry and media bring into the notice of the public in a very interesting way as an awareness program with prescriptions and suggestions for the parents and other people how to deal with them when they meet such kind of people at home and public places.

What I am writing all this is to show only the positive role of Indian electronic and print media and film industry to highlight problems with positive practical suggestions and prescriptions not the negative aspect which is another topic of debate.
Our media whether it’s print or electronic and film industry is not as active as necessary in this hour of the day. Our film industry is based on vernaculars i.e. Panjabi, Sindhi, Baluchi and Pashto which is oriented in these people not of national and international nature. If there are such programs and stories has been designed which certainly remain unnoticed due to their limited nature of focus.

Chitral is a truncated province of Pakistan, herein depression is developing with more speed. Our social milieu is undergoing through a critical stage which has resulted to frustration and depression in young generation. Depression is a new phenomenon for the third world countries particularly for Chitrali people. Health department of Pakistan also shows lip service with regard to depression. It needs to be redressed abruptly. If our electronic media is not able to do such kind of job then through the esteemed paper of Chitral I would rather to request and liable to demand from government , provincial government and health department of Chitral to make a cell equipped with doctors and psychologist to treat depressed people within Chitral. Those people, who become victim of this diseases in Chitral, are put behind the bar or in house seclusion which adversely affects their health further rather than treating them by the doctors and psychologist. Here I would also request to concern NGOs to launch awareness program in Chitral especially for these special people and to public.

I am going to conclude with these words of Mother Teresa “If we can not love the person whom we see, how can we love God, whom we can’t see”?

Alhaj Muhammad Khan
Charun.
