to Chitral-Shandur Road By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: The people of Chitral have proposed diversion of
vehicular traffic to Chitral-Shandur Pass route till the route of
Attabad Hunza is cleared of debris lake. Talking to
chitraltimes.com here on Thursday, Dr. Inayatullah Faizi and Syed
Sardar Hussain Shah, a development worker said that Shandur Top
route could be the best possible diversion which can provide a safe
and short passage to link the northern areas with Islamabad. They
said that from Gilgit to Islamabad, it takes about twenty hours
while via Shandur-Chitral route, its length may be longer by only
three hours. They said that Chitral route is the only option to
retain link of Gilgit with the federal capital as Babusar-Shangla
top also remains affected by the lake. They said that Gilgit
Shandur road has recently been widened and blacktopped from Gilgit
side to the Shandur Pass and Northern Areas Transport Company (NATCO)
has already launched bus services between Gilgit and Mastuj
Chitral. “the road from Shandur to Lowari top are quite feasible to
endure any volume of vehicular traffic and the road side area is
quite viable to receive any strength of passengers”, one of them
said. They recalled that in the remote past, Chitral formed of the
principality which stretched from Chitral to Gilgit and there are
still similarities in their cultures and way of life. “The people
of Chitral are eager to receive their Gilgiti brethren”, said Dr.
Faizi adding that Chitral has already became a vibrant market of
Chinese goods. He said that with the introduction of NATCO bus
service between Chitral and Gilgit, the interaction between the
people of the two areas has increased manifold.
