Chitralis Need playgrounds to engage
the youth in healthy activities
Chitral ‘city of peace and rich traditions’ lacks playgrounds to
involve the young generation in healthy activities while the
provincial and federal government still to pay heed.
Chitralis want free and accessible playgrounds seven days a week in
the main city, Drosh, Booni and Garamchashma.
There is only one small overcrowded playground in the main city.
When tournaments organized there, residents cannot play for weeks.
The locals play mostly at riverside in sands due to the lack of
playgrounds.
The situation is more pathetic in the other three valleys of Drosh,
Booni and Garamchashma.
Shafiqur Rehman, a resident of the main Chitral city said: “We need
playgrounds for soccer and cricket as there are for polo to save
the young generation from drug abuse and other social problems, and
it is up to the government to provide that.”
Adnan, a soccer player of local club said, they had soccer
knowledge and experience; but the inattention of authorities made
them unable to come forward and play for Pakistan.
“Chitrali soccer players had the potential to be tomorrow’s
international stars, but they can only reach their potential if
they had playground for the purpose,” he added.
