Residents of Gobor demands emergency relief
By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: The residents of Gobor have demanded of the
government to declare their area as calamity hit and solve their
problems on priority basis otherwise the people will resort to mass
migration to save their lives. Addressing a press conference here
on Friday, former councilors from the area Muhammad Hussain,
Muhammad Tahir and Abdul Halim said that the area borders
Afghanistan and has remained backward while intense weather
conditions due to its occurrence in high altitude aggravates their
problems. They said that due to premature snowfall in the area, the
crops of wheat, potato and barely have completely been destroyed
which formed source of sustenance for the people. They said that in
the absence of any a solid support on the part of the government,
all the dwellers of five hundred households will face starvation.
They added that farming is the only source of earning livelihood
for the people of this remote area. They regretted that from the
year 1980 to 2001, the district council earned about 40 millions of
rupees as octroi tax for Afghan trade but not a single penny was
spent on the uplift of this border area which is bereft of basic
amenities of life. They said that the area connects Chitral with
Badakhshan area of Afghanistan and has served as important trade
route between Chitral and Afghanistan. They further complained that
in the district border force which has been raised to check
smuggling and illegal crossing of borders, the residents of Gobor
have so far been neglected altogether while they can more helpful
due to their intimacy with the local routes. They demanded of
district coordination officer of Chitral who is also the commandant
of the force to include maximum number of youth from the area in
the forthcoming recruitments which is in progress. They said that
the proposed Chitral-Tajikistan road will pass through the area but
some elements have been active to get it diverted to Baroghil Pass
only for their political ends. They stressed that the road via
Gobor is the shortest and safest of all and the government should
ignore such impracticable and selfish proposals.
