Residents of servant colony Denin suffered from dysentery

By Zahiruddin

CHITRAL: As many as sixteen persons residing in a government servant colony were admitted to the DHQ hospital within the last two days who suffered from dysentery, the residents said. They feared that the break-out of the disease is due to the consumption of contaminated water provided by Water and Sanitation Unit (WSU) run by the tehsil municipal administration. They said that they had reported the matter to tehsil nazim Chitral who did nothing except sending the water sample for test in the laboratory. They said that although the nazim Sartaj Ahmed Khan who is ex officio chairman of WSU visited the colony on Saturday, but only delivered a lecture on the importance of cleanliness. They expressed their fear that due to the leakage of the faulty water pipes, the water from the sewerage line has mixed with the drinking water. They said that the WSU authorities did not bother to open and check the water pipes. When the tehsil nazim was contacted by this correspondent, he confirmed that the water sample has been sent for test in the laboratory after which steps will be taken if the water is found contaminated.

Students stage sit-in to protest the unavailability of water

By our Correspondent

CHITRAL: To protest against the unavailability of drinking water in the college and its hostels, the enraged students of government college Chitral staged a sit-in in Atalique Chowk and blocked the vehicular traffic for more than two hours. The students were chanting slogans against the administration for its failure to provide water to the hostels which are without water for the last ten days. A number of student leaders addressed on the occasion and criticized the administration for its utter failure to provide water. They resolved to continue their sit-in for indefinite time till the water is made available in the college campus but on the assurance of the Chitral DCO, they returned to the college peacefully. The students, however, gave another deadline of two days to the administration and said that they will turn violent if drinking water is not made available.
