State-run Media and Cigarettes advertisements

Dear Editor

It is regrettable that Pakistan Television Corporation is continuing with advertisements like those of K-2 and Red & White Cigarettes, although it is an established medical opinion that cigarette smoking causes lungs and throat cancer. The state-run electronic media is just interested in minting money without caring for nation's health.

Shesha is dangerous for people.

Dear Editor:

Through the column of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the authorities in to this matter.

Shisha offers a mixture of crude types of tobacco fermented with fruits and the sweet odour of fruits conceals the natural smell of tobacco?s tar and nicotine. A large number of school and college students of both genders belonging to under-18 age group can be seen using shisha at most restaurants and hotels of the country. In fact, every day new shisha cafes are opening up in the country because of its increasing demand by the younger generation.

In Pakistan tobacco sale is prohibited by law to anybody under the age of 18. Smoking is also prohibited at all public places, including hotels and restaurants. It is indeed sad that by allowing cigarette and shisha smoking in these closed premises, the anti-smoking laws of the country are being openly violated by almost all hotels and restaurants in the country.

Our health authorities must take notice of the current situation and put a complete ban on serving Shisha at any hotel or restaurants in the country.

Yours Truly,
Sameera Ahmed

Bottled water and sea salt

Dear Editor:

Great strides in public health have been made over the past decades by fluoridating drinking water thus reducing tooth decay and iodizing salt to prevent thyroid deficiencies resulting in goiter.

With the current trends toward bottled water which is not fluoridated and sea salt which is not iodized it would appear that we are risking the return of public health problems which had been largely eliminated.

Your, sincerely

Extracurricular activities

Through the column of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to draw the attention of the authorities in to this matter.

Extracurricular activities are an important part of life. They show that an individual is multi-dimensional. They demonstrate interests, passions, personality, contribute to advancement of knowledge.

They make you a more interesting person, someone that can contribute to the diversity and vitality of a class and alumni network. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate qualities such as creativity, leadership, teamwork, communication skills, and initiative.

There are many, many ways of creating a sense of diversity. A good place to start is with your own interests and passions. Think hard about what interests you, and how you can leverage those interests.

Thanking you,
Syed Wahaj Ali
Karachi.
