Chitral- Shikashim Highway and Durah Pass

This refers to a description given by Mr. Liaqat Ali about Chitral-Shikashim Highway. In his report Liaqat has tried to convince the government regarding the construction of Chitral-Shikashim highway through Durah pass instead of Broghel. In response to Liaqat's point of view, here are some evident based and relevant points to share with the public and the government to let them know that why this Highway should be built via Durah Pass:

1. According to the report, it is evident that there is a big difference between the distances of both locations. Durah pass is nearly 120 km shorter than Broghel. It is not a negligible distance to be neglected. If there is a need of 5km tunnel in Durah pass, even though it can be cost effective than Broghel. Because this tunnel once constructed will remain forever. The daily cost of 120km extra distance will be hundred times higher than the total cost of tunnel only within a few years.

2. Everybody knows that Chitral -Gramchashma road has been constructed geographically on wrong side. If it could be constructed along the right side of river from Chitral, than there would be no or less danger of glaciers and land sliding. Indeed Durah pass will be constructed along the right side, and it will be a totally risk-free highway.

3. Chitral already has a link with China through Shandur road which passes through KK Highway to China. Shandur road has been repaired and broaden. So, if Chitral-Shikashim road is constructed through Durah pass, it will give another channel of communication with China, which will strength the geographical position of Chitral in the region.

4. Government has its own competent infrastructure and machinery to assess and evaluate the cause and effect. On the basis of a thoroughly assessment, government might has taken this decision.

5.We are all Chitralis and brothers. We should keep in the mind the best benefit of the whole region, not any cast, group or specific area.

6. This kind of action will hinder the task of government and the interest of public. We must let the government do its job for the betterment of the public and region.

Hakim Shah,
Karachi.
