Getting real about climate change

Dear Editor,

As it is now November and the time when decisions of our government are going to try and impose upon us based on their interpretation of just what is causing global warming, I believe it is time for Australians of all persuasions to stop and look into the real situation facing us and examine some of the facts.

Fact 1: Global warming has occurred previously within the past two hundred years, long before we of the 'modern' era were about. A simple and irrefutable event indicated that the North Sea ice was reduced enough for the first North West Passage to have taken place.

Fact 2: The biggest carbon sink on Earth, covers two thirds of our planet, it is our oceans. Any attempt by man to duplicate the scale of that phenomenon, by sequestration or any other means is pathetic by comparison and we will never know if it works.

Fact 3: An event happened at the end of the Jurassic Period which, whether it was caused by tectonic plate movement , volcanoes or meteor strike, enveloped our planet in smoke and dust for well over a million years. The planet warmed, the dinosaurs were extinguished. The indication was that pollution, in physical terms was responsible for the warming, not a colorless gas.

Fact 4: There is no agreement between all of the various top scientists throughout the world, that carbon dioxide (CO2) is responsible. We have just been fed that information on the basis that provided it is said enough times by important, but ignorant, statesmen, we, the simple folk of this planet will believe them. We would be taking a huge leap of faith, which might end up with all of us in very hot water. Not caused by global warming, but by additional costs to our lifestyle, the subject of such costs are carefully avoided at the moment, because the same statesmen mentioned above, have no real idea what effects their legislation will have on the costs to industry, commerce and us. They are guessing. Once a tax is introduced, it's never repealed.

Fact 5: Has any one us seen, in print, by a team of appropriate scientists, a theory which can back up the statement that CO2 , as a gas, can cause global warming. If for example, CO2 was on trial for its life based on the circumstantial evidence trotted out by all and sundry, the case would be thrown out of court. It is simply not possible to pin it down to fact, as any judge would say!

Where in the Theory of Gases does it mention that in a mixture of gases, which is what our atmosphere is, that one of the gases, which constitutes less than 1/2% of the mixture, can, by increasing its percentage, affect the properties of the mixture. CO2 does not and cannot act like a catalyst in the mixture to create such an effect. Please, please if their is an answer to this let us all know. Otherwise we should be looking elsewhere for the culprit, and there may be one, its called pollution!

Fact 6: Our planet has been around for 4,540 million years. The dinosaurs have been and gone over their period of 160 million years over 225 million years ago. Lucy, our earliest human relative as 3.2 million years old when she was found in Ethiopia. Earth has endured the phenomenon of solidification and plate movement, solar radiation and all manner of physical events. We, modern man, have been here for 5 minutes and think we know how to control our planet. I think not.

Suggestion 1: It must be apparent to all, that pollution of our atmosphere by solid particles is much more likely to have an effect on trapping heat than any change in percentage of a colourless gas. One only has to look over any city in the world to see the brown tinge of pollution. That, pollution reduction, is also a target for all governments, is real and actively pursued, is creditable. Industry knows it, the people know it, governments know it. Let?s stay focused on it.

Suggestion 2: Most of us drive cars, every day. Every car has an engine which generates vast quantities of heat whilst it is working. That heat, we don?t feel. It is dissipated into the atmosphere as we drive along. There are more than half a billion cars throughout the world today.
That is 520,000,000 vehicles charging around for hours, every single day, dissipating its heat load into the atmosphere! No wonder we might be getting a bit warmer.

Suggestion 3: The reason for this one eyed approach to global warming is because the world's elite needs to find a way to tax the vast majority of the people and keep them in their place. Cynical you might say. Not so, seeing that most of the western world has grown up with a Greek slant on government, that was based on the paradigm, that only the elite and self wealthy should rule theworld, the rest are their to pay for it. And pay for it we will if we ever end up with Carbon Tax,
in any form.
So, what to do?
First prove to the world, not just tell us, that Global Warming is the responsibility of carbon dioxide, openly and simply.
If it proven and accepted, then proceed the way of Copenhagen. Much as our PM wants to lead the pack, the problem, if it exists, requires the whole world to act in concert.

If it is not proven, drop this carbon trading nonsense, do some real research into whether or not our planet is
being affected by human actions, and if so, then is the time to act, when we know why and how.

In the meantime, let us all take a deep breath, step back and look at the actual facts, before stepping off what could be a very high cliff.

Yours truly,
HIRA AQIL
Karachi.

Smoking on public places

Dear Editor

A Few days ago, I went to a cafe with my family. As we were waiting for our order, I noticed that the place was full of young people, and most of them were smoking incessantly. I decided to have word about it with the manager. I asked him, whether he knew that an act of parliament has been passed and that smoking in all public places had been banned and that there was a violation of the law taking place in his café.

The manager responded rather rudely. He bluntly told me that it was the job of the authorities to stop them and that I was nobody to object.

Through these columns I would like to ask authorities concerned to take notice of this menace. I could clearly see that not only were many under-age children smoking, but non-smokers like myself were subjected to second-hand unfiltered smoke, much against our wishes.

Thanking You
Mahreen fatima
