Frauds in Gas Stations and Petrol Pumps
Dear Sir,
This observation is not from the distant past but only a year or so
back: I noticed that at some petrol pumps and CNG stations if you
give a Rs1000 note for gas of (say) Rs200 the attendant will return
to you a change of Rs300 without the Rs500 note which was also due
with the balance as Rs800. On questioning the attendant, he would
apologize and add a Rs500 note, saying that he forgot to return it.
In some other situations if the gas bill was (say) Rs220, the
attendant would deduct Rs320 and return only return Rs180 back to
the customer out of his Rs500 note. This practice of incorrect
return of change was backed by additional support as the attendant,
before getting this transaction settled, would change the reading
of the meter.
With the passage of time the apologetic attitude of the attendants
went away and was replaced by their insisting and swearing attitude
to prove that the change returned was justified and correct.
Awakened by this psychological fraud, I kept a track of this trend.
Just within a few months’ time, I noticed that the frequency of
encountering these frauds have increased manifold as more and more
filling stations have adopted them.
My occasional reporting to the managers of the stations concerned
could only bring a spot lip-service but without tangible results.
Now as Pro Bono Publico, I may shock the nation that these kind of
fraudulent exercises are increasing like chain reactions not only
at petrol pumps but are now visible in many commercial shops also.
The popularity of such exercises are increasing rapidly day by day
as during the past week alone I came across such encounters at
three gas stations in different sectors of Karachi and two while
driving from Karachi to Hyderabad. My further inquiries revealed
that the owners of the stations have a share in this booty.
If this increasing fraud is not taken seriously and nipped in the
bud (which is now no more a bud but has become a fully-grown
flower), then every rational mind can foresee it as culminating
into spot arguments/quarrels, street/station scuffles and possibly
leading to occasional murders.
Since these trends cannot be curbed without stern action from the
public, administration, legislature and the judiciary; hence, it is
brought to the notice of all those concerned.

Beggars on Traffic Signals
Sir,
I would be grateful if you very kindly publish this letter in your
esteemed daily. With the immense increase in the number of
vehicles, the driving has become an awful sport. The roads can’t
bear such heavy traffic and the signals at every short distance
make driving more painful. Along with all these miseries, the
presence of a variety of beggars at every signal adds fuel to fire.
These beggars of this modern era have invented the innovative
techniques of begging. We see them selling news paper and asking
for alm, wiping the windscreen without the driver’s consent and
make the screen even worse. The women carrying young babies and
young girls beg with a variety of appeals. At the green signal when
every one is in great hurry to get his way, these beggars take much
time in leaving their positions or crossing the roads.
No step is taken to check the traffic of such beggars. I requested
that authorities should take an immediate step to discourage
beggars on the road and save commuters from such nuisance.

VIPs Movement and Traffic
Sir,
One wonders who is to balance for the traffic chaos created by
frequent vip movement on Karachi’s road. The traffic authorities
never feel the responsibility to come up with a methodical traffic
plan by providing alternatives routes for commuters and making
these plans known to the public in advance. The Vip movement every
now and then puts citizens in agony when the traffic comes to a
half for hours due to the unending queues of cars, Buses & Taxis
Few days ago, the situation became worst when two heart patients
being rushed to hospital were held up in a monstrous traffic as a
result of the closure of some roads to allow for Vip movement .
tragically both were declared dead on reaching the hospital.
It is requested that some measures should be taken to avert such
tragedies and hardships caused to the Karachi’s. The travel routes
and the timings for the arrival of the president or prime minister
can be so planned as to involve least inconvenience and delays for
the commuters. The police, in working out a traffic management
plan, should put the priorities of the commuters above, those of
vip functionaries. Ambulances must be allowed to go, even on the
roads, that have been temporarily closed to ordinary traffic.
