Ban of 100 years demanded on forest cutting
in Chitral
By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: A worker of JUI (F) from Drosh Chitral, Qari Fazle
Haq has demanded of the government to stop the harvesting of forest
on commercial scale in the name of windfall. Addressing a press
conference here on Saturday, he alleged that the members of the
powerful timber mafia and the authorities of Forest Development
Corporation (FDC) are in collusion with each other to denude the
Chitral forests to extort money. Flanked by the district secretary
of the party Moulana Balinnas, he said that the forests of Chitral
have already been destroyed by the timber mafia. He warned that the
environment of Chitral will be destroyed and flash floods will
sweep away the fertile lands of Chitral valley if the illegal
cutting of trees is not stopped forthwith. “The timber mafia is
playing with the bright future of Chitrali people for amassing
wealth”, Mr. Haq said expressed his resolve to fight the illegal
action of ‘massacre of trees’. He said that he will approach the
Peshawar High Court against the deforestation and will not shrink
from any sacrifice for the noble cause of saving the forest. He
also demanded of the government to impose a ban of one hundred
years on the cutting of trees in the forests of Chitral to save its
environment.
