The victims of Lowari laid to rest in chitral
By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL Two of the passengers who died on Monday in Lowari
Top after being hit by snow avalanche were laid to rest in
Madaklusht village of Drosh valley here on Tuesday. Both the
deceased Rahimdad and Sahib Nadir belonged to the same village who
were traveling to Chitral via Lowari Top with a convoy of eight
passengers after the NHA authorities did not permit them to travel
through the tunnel. No clue of the other passengers could be traced
on Tuesday till filing of this report. Meanwhile, the reported
death of the eight passengers in the Lowari Pass has sparked
widespread protests of the people of Chitral who held the
government responsible for the death of the passengers but not
allowing traveling the tunnel. They termed the attitude of the
federal government as ‘stubborn’ and said that despite repeated
demand of the people of Chitral and its elected representatives the
ministry of communication did not open the tunnel for the
passengers which took the lives of nine passengers. District nazim
Chitral Maghfirat Shah said that both the zilla council and the
provincial assembly had adopted unanimous resolutions requesting
the federal government to open the tunnel for the passengers but
all these were relentlessly turned down. Talking to
chitraltimes.com He alleged that the MNA from the area blocked all
the efforts of opening the tunnel. Expressing his utter dismay of
the apathetic attitude of the federal government, he said that so
far not a single word of sympathy has been uttered by the prime
minister for the victims of the incident. He said that the
government rushes to announce hefty amount as compensation for the
heirs of the deceased in traffic accidents in other parts of the
country but the poor residents of Chitral did not enjoy the favour
the rulers. He said that the provision of all weather route to its
people is the prime responsibility of the state while it denied the
use of tunnel for them which is a mockery of the five lakh
population across this side of Lowari Pass. The chairman of Lowari
Action Committee (LAC) Haji Mohammad Shifa highly criticized the
government and warned that LAC had already warned the government
that many precious lives perish if the tunnel is not opened because
the stranded passengers try to cross the Lowari Pass in
desperation. The acting ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Moulana Israruddin
Al-Hilal also criticized the government for its cold attitude
towards the people of Chitral and said that the government is
deliberately trying to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the
district.
