Chuinjiks block the Yarkhoon road as protest
By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: Hundreds of the residents of Chuinj village of
Mastuj have blocked the Yarkhoon road to register the alleged
indifference and negligence of the government to restore the
irrigation channel of the village which had been washed away by the
torrential floods last year. The residents of the village situated
at a distance of 160 kilometres from here in the north told
chitraltimes.com by telephone that they resorted to road blockade
after the expiry of the deadline they had served to the government.
They said that the government did pay heed to their problem while
they were not able to cultivate wheat crop this year as the
irrigation channel has completely been washed away by the flood.
They said that they approached all the elected representatives of
the area and the other officials time and again but to no avail.
The villagers said that in the absence of irrigation water, they
have lost their source of sustenance as they are dependent on
agriculture. They said that hundreds of cattle heads have perished
due to the drought in the village. They expressed their resolve
that the blockade of road will continue till work is started on the
restoration of the channel. Meanwhile, tehsil nazim Shahzada
Sikandarul Mulk and district officer (revenue) Akbar Jalal rushed
to the spot to hold negotiation with the protesters to open the
road but the blockade continues till the filing of this story.
