Call for experience sharing to protect
women’s rights
From Our Correspondent
CHITRAL: A daylong seminar on experience sharing regarding
women and human rights was held here at a hotel organised by Easy
and Equitable Access to Justice Programme Chitral funded by
TROCAIRE Ireland.
Tehsil nazim Sartaj Ahmad Khan was the chief guest on the occasion
which besides officials of district government was largely attended
by representatives of local NGOs and a large number of members of
civil society.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Saleema Hassan, a noted gynecologist
and member Board of Director LAPH, said that male and female should
equally be treated by their parents because of having equal rights.
She emphasised to streamline and frame a joint strategy for
protection of women rights by involving all stakeholders including
religious scholars and women forums.
She added that education was the only way for women to participate
in development of the country and save them from discrimination.
Saleema stressed upon all stakeholders especially women activists
to visit different schools and colleges and aware female regarding
their basic rights and duties.
Tehsil nazim Sartaj in his address said that lack of opportunities
in employment, non-availability of training and skill development
centres for womenfolk had frustrated them and that was why the
ratio of suicide incidents among women was on the rise in the
district.
He demanded of the government to set up a women reporting counter
at each police station or at least at sub-division and district
level where oppressed women could register their complaints easily
and without any hesitation.
