By Zahiruddin

CHITRAL: The day of the completion of the first phase of the Lowari rail tunnel project will be celebrated with great pomp and show for which different programmes are being chalked out and all the segments of society will be involved in the jubilations. Presiding over a meeting of the heads of all the political parties and civil society organizations in connection with the ‘thanks giving day’ preparations in his office here on Monday, the district nazim Maghfirat Shah said that the completion of the 9 kilometre long tunnel connecting Chitral with the rest of the country will be counted as landmark in the history of Chitral. He said that the people of all shades of opinion are united to make the day a historic moment. Mr. Shah said that the completion of the digging work of the tunnel is expected in the first week of December this year and thanks-giving day will be celebrated on this day. He said that the people of Chitral will be able right in the forthcoming winter to travel through the tunnel after the closure of Lowari Pass for which the approval of the communication ministry has already been obtained. The Lowari Pass closes in the second week of December every year for five months every year due to heavy snow and avalanches in the pass whose height is 10230 feet above the sea level. The district nazim constituted a committee to finalize the various programmes and events of the day which has already been declared a public holiday. Tehsil nazim Chitral Sartaj Ahmed Khan was appointed as the chairman of the committee who will hold its daily meetings while the tentative date of the day was fixed at December 15. District nazim directed all the government departments and various organizations to extend all possible day to the committee.
