By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: The first phase of digging the tunnel of Lowari
rail tunnel project will be completed in the first week of December
this year and will be opened for the public in the forthcoming
winter after the closure of Lowari Pass for the season as a result
of heavy snowfall. Talking to the local newsmen on the occasion of
Eid Milan party here on Monday, district nazim Chitral Maghfirat
Shah said that the completion of the first phase of the project
will be an historical day in the history of Chitral which will be
celebrated as ‘thanks giving’ day. He said that the day will be
declared a public holiday in the district and programmes will be
arranged in Drosh, Chitral city and Booni. He said that
preparations have been started by the district government to
celebrate the day in befitting manner. He said that the second
phase of the project will commence soon but as a dire need of the
local people, the tunnel will be used to transport the passengers
on either side. He said that the in the previous years, Chitralis
used to travel through the Kunar province of Afghanistan and
Mohmand Agency in the winter season due to the closure of Lowari
Pass but it will not possible due to the volatile situation both in
Afghanistan and the tribal areas of Pakistan. He said that the
National Highway Authority (NHA) high-ups have agreed to facilitate
the passengers through the under construction tunnel after the
completion of its first phase. He said that the NHA buses will make
shuttle service inside the tunnel to transpose the passengers on
either side. The frequency of the trip may be only two daily to
avoid any disturbance to the ongoing work on the second phase. He
said that the residents of Chitral were quite worried about the
winter season this year due to the tense situation in Mohmand and
Bajaur agencies and the Kunar province of Afghanistan.
