Ladies health workers programme doing great service in
healthcare
By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: The national programme for family planning and
primary healthcare has caused to bring down infant mortality rate
from 57 to 38 per thousand while maternal mortality rate plunged to
only 100 per 100,000 during the last eleven years. A source in the
health department told chitraltimes.com here on Friday that
launched in 1995 in the district, the programme popularly known as
Ladies Health workers Programme has rendered tremendous services to
the people as a result of which health indicators have improved. He
said that to arrest the population explosion in the district, the
contraceptive prevalence rate has been increased by 18 percent over
the period which has served the purpose to a great extent. The
primary healthcare consisted maternal child healthcare, education
on sanitation and better nutrition and treatment of minor ailments.
He said that in the 24 union councils of the district, 466 ladies
health workers are serving the population being available to the
people round the clock supervised by 20 lady supervisors who have
been provided with jeeps. He said that a health worker covers a
population ranging from 700 to 1000. He said that the pregnant
ladies are taken special care of and they are provided iron tablets
and other medicines and the health workers visit them periodically
and keep a record of the health state. He said that as the health
facilities are very limited, so the women folk depend on the
programme and derive maximum benefit from it. The health workers
are bound to visit a house at least five times a month and educate
its members about cleanliness, medication and impart training on
preparation of ORS. He said that the programme has also helped the
health department to make the national immunization days a success.
The source said that under the programme, basic drugs are provided
in sufficient quantities by the provincial programme implementation
unit and a good volume of the drugs is stored in Chitral before the
closure of Lowari Pass for the season in the month of December
every year. The source suggested to further strengthening the
programme due to its vitality and quick response to the population.
He suggested that the criterion of the ratio of a health worker to
population be relaxed due to the fact that the district is sparsely
populated. The enhancement of drug quota for the district due to
its backwardness will also mitigate the sufferings of the people.
It merits mentioning here that due to the successful operation of
the programme in the district, its coordinator was decorated with
award some years ago.
