A number of villages in Mastuj hit by high flood
By Zahiruddin
CHITRAL: The Chitral river is again on its high tide and has
washed away dozens of homes in Mastuj, Parkusap, Chuinj and Chapari
and hundreds of acres of fertile lands with standing crops of rice,
maize and fodder and fruit trees, the residents said. They said
that due to proximity of the areas to the Chiantar glacier, which
is the origin of Chitral river, the villages were flooded with
increase in temperature over the last couple of days as the glacier
started melting. They said that hundreds of people have been
rendered homeless while communication infrastructure of road and
suspension bridges have also been damaged. They said that water
supply schemes of the villages have also been swept away forcing
them to consume the contaminated water of the river which is in
high flood. They apprehended outbreak of disease due to the
contaminated water as the number of patients is increasing day by
day. The residents said that no substantial help has been provided
to them from any quarter while no any elected representative has
paid visit to the wretched area to apprise himself of their
sufferings.
