Chitral Times Report

GILGIT: Nine youth from district Chitral participated in “Youth Mountaineering Skills Enhancing Training Camp” (YMSETC) in Shimshal Valley of Gilgit organized by Pakistan Youth Outreach (PYO) & Karakorum Expeditions.

The participants were sponsored by Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP) Chitral under Enhancing Employability and Leadership for Youth (EELY) project funded by Global Affairs, Government of Canada. The participants selected from across Chitral (Chapali, Booni, Mastuj, Drosh) were trained at Malangutti Glacier Shimshal (3,048 meters) under the supervision of highly trained mountain climbers from Pakistan and Romania. The participants were trained on rock climbing, ice climbing and rescue actions. The 10 days training started on 10th of January and concluded by 20th of January.

Talking to our correspondent Mr. Atta Ur Rehman Enterprise Development officer AKRSP Chtiral said that the purpose of this training was to equip youth with mountaineering skills keeping in view the mountain tourism potential in the area. He said that District Chitral has an immense potential for adventure tourism but lacks skilled youth in the sector for provision of necessary services such as trained climbers, guides and porters.
